LGBTQIA+ Affirming Care

Individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community frequently encounter barriers and discrimination in obtaining medical and therapeutic care that acknowledges and supports their unique identities. We are committed to LGBTQIA+ affirmation and understand the profound effects this can exert on both mental and physical well-being. We offer an environment where clients’ lived experiences are validated, creating a safe space for open dialogue about sexual orientation and/or gender identity as it pertains to their personalized care and overall health.

LGBTQIA+ affirming care means providing respectful and understanding support that acknowledges and embraces the unique experiences of individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, and asexual or allied.

A dietitian can provide LGBTQIA+ affirming care through various means, including:

  • Cultural Competency: Understanding and respecting the cultural and personal aspects that might impact dietary preferences and needs. For example, recognizing that some individuals may have eating habits tied to their gender transition process.

  • Personalized Care Plans: Recognizing that LGBTQIA+ individuals may have specific health needs or concerns and working with them to create individualized and supportive care plans.

  • Privacy and Confidentiality: Ensuring that information related to a client’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or other personal matters is kept confidential and handled with care and respect.

  • Providing Support for Unique Nutritional Needs: This may include support for individuals undergoing hormone therapy, managing the unique nutritional needs of transgender individuals, or addressing body image issues prevalent in some LGBTQIA+ communities.

  • Feedback and Continuous Improvement: Encouraging feedback from LGBTQIA+ clients and making regular improvements to ensure that the care provided is continually responsive to the unique needs of this community.

By fostering an inclusive and compassionate approach, a dietitian can provide effective care that recognizes and respects the unique needs and experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals.
